Giving up great food isn’t an option for many of us during the holidays, but neither is an extra five pounds.  You can eat right and still enjoy the holiday season with these tips:

Bring Your Own Healthy Dish to Parties and Potlucks

To guarantee there’s something healthy on the buffet, volunteer to bring it yourself.  Seasonal salads, vegetable trays, homemade bean dip or roasted vegetables are great alternatives to the usual suspects.  Your friends will thank you!

Don’t Hover Around the Buffet Table

Use a small plate and choose three or four items you really want to eat.  Move away from the table so you’re not tempted to graze.

Eat Before You Arrive

Prepare yourself a healthy snack so you don’t arrive on an empty stomach.   Raw vegetables fill the stomach with fiber-rich foods that provides a feeling of fullness.

Limit Your Alcoholic Beverages

Before you eat, drink at least eight ounces of water so your thirst is quenched and your stomach feels a little full.  Limit alcoholic beverages to one or two drinks for the evening.   Tell a friend who will be supportive.

Choose Low-Calorie and Low-Carb Foods

There are plenty of naturally low calorie festive and high protein foods.  Go for crudités, lean deli meats, chicken kebabs, boiled shrimp, and hard cheeses (but skip the cracker).
